Narayana dasa is a versatile Phalit dasa and different from Vimshottari dasa. Vimshottari dasa is that dasa which is also a Nakshatra dasa where Narayana dasa is that of Rasi dasa. The total numbers of Years allocated to each of the rasi is that of 12 years hence the total Narayana dasa period is that of 144 (12 years * 12 signs=144 years) Note: At given point of time the years alloted to the rasi cannot be more than 12 years.
How to calculate the dasa period of each rasi:
There are 12 signs in a zodiac and each of these signs are categorized as Vimsapada(odd footed) and Samapada(even footed) and further divided in three groups like:
Aries, Taurus and Gemini is Vimsapada
Cancer,Leo and Virgo is Samapada
Libra,Scorpio and Sagittarius is Vimsapada
Capricorn,Aquarius and Pisces is Samapada
As Narayana is related to lagna and 7th house we need to see the stronger of these two. Here we find that Lagna is having Venus and 7th house is empty hence lagna is stronger than 7th house so the Narayana dasa starts from Leo.
Flow of rasi periods have to be considered in the following way:
For this purpose we need to understand source of strength for each and every sign
1)The sign with the Atmakaraka is considered stronger
2)The sign with a planet or with more planets are considered stronger compared to that of a sign with no planet
3)If the sign has equal number of planets then the planets like exaltation,Moolatrikona or own house is considered stronger
4)If still they are stronger then dual signs are stronger than fixed and fixed stronger than movable
5)The sign whose lord is the AK is stronger
6)In case none of the signs are stronger then take the planet with higher longitude as a strong planet
7)If the two signs have the same lord or if their lords have equal longitudes then for an even sign the placement of lord in a male sign or for an odd sign the placement of the lord is an even sign is a source of strength
8)The sign which gives higher dasa period is stronger.
In order to understand the source of strength the rules of 2nd,1st,3rd and 4th are to be considered in Narayana dasa.
Rule 2:The sign with more planets are considered strong
Rule 1:The sign with the Atmakaraka is considered strong
Rule 3:If the sign has equal number of planet then consider then consider the status of the planet like Exaltation,Moolatrikona and Own sign
Rule 4:Dual signs are stronger than fixed and fixed are stronger than movable
Hence for the purpose of calculating the years alloted to each of the 12 signs the Vimsapada and Samapada has to be considered. Vimsapada(Zodiacly) and Samapada(Reverse). If the sign is Vimsapada the counting has to go in the clockwise direction otherwise it is anticlockwise. Let us check this using a chart:
Let us take each of the sign from Aries and allocate the years for each of the sign and the total of all these 12 signs should be 144 years allocated as per the Narayana dasa.
First check whether the lagna or the 7th is stronger and take the sign which is stronger as the starting point for the Narayana dasa and there after use the source of strength to consider which dasa follows and later for the purpose of arriving the years to be calculated we need to check whether the sign is Odd footed or Even footed
Native was born in the year 1967 and Leo being the strongest the starting dasa will be Leo.
Leo sign lord is Sun which is placed in Gemini sign and Leo being Samapada and the lord Sun has moved 3 signs away the total signs allocated to Leo is 3 but Leo Samapada we have to deduct 1 years from 3 and we get 2 years. Hence the period allocated to Leo is 2 years
Next we see to which sign follows the sign Leo and here we find that Jupiter is aspecting the sign Capricorn by 7th house Drishti. Here Capricorn becomes stronger and the lord of Capricorn is Saturn in the 6th house from itself and we also see that Capricorn is Samapada(Even footed) and the counting has to be done in reverse direction to check where the lord Saturn is falling. Here we find that Saturn has moved 11 signs from Capricorn and as it was in anticlockwise direction then total numbers of years is reduced to 10 years (11-1=10). In this way the total Narayana dasa table can be computed as follows:
